RACE Writing Strategy

This online course teaches students how to write strong, complete responses using the RACE strategy: Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain. Through engaging lessons, practice activities, and examples, students will learn how to restate questions clearly, provide direct answers, support their ideas with text evidence, and explain their thinking. By the end of the course, students will feel confident using RACE to write organized, well-supported responses in reading and writing.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Understand what the RACE strategy is and why it helps in writing strong responses.

• Restate a question by turning it into the beginning of their answer.

• Answer questions directly and stay on topic.

• Cite text evidence using quotation marks, paraphrasing, and sentence starters.

• Explain how their evidence supports their answer using their own words.

• Practice writing complete short-answer responses that follow all four steps.

• Apply the RACE strategy independently to reading comprehension and writing prompts.
