RACE Writing Strategy

When answering short-answer questions in reading or writing, it’s important to make your response clear, organized, and complete. The RACE strategy is a helpful way to remember the steps:

  • R – Restate the question.
Begin your answer by turning the question into a statement. This shows you understand what is being asked.

  • A – Answer the question.
Give a clear and direct answer. Don’t leave the reader guessing.

  • C – Cite text evidence.
Use words or sentences from the text to back up your answer. This proves your point.

  • E – Explain your evidence.
Tell how your evidence supports your answer. This is where you show your thinking.

By following RACE, your writing will be complete and strong. It helps teachers see your understanding and makes your answers easier to follow.
