RACE Writing Strategy

The second step of the RACE strategy is A – Answer the Question. After you restate the question, you need to give a clear and direct answer. This tells the reader exactly what you think before you add text evidence.

Here are some tips for answering:

  • Be specific and stay on topic.

  • Give a complete thought, not just one word.

  • Make sure your answer matches the question that was asked.

  • Save your text evidence for the next step—don’t mix them yet.

Example

Question: Why is it important to eat healthy foods?
Restated: Eating healthy foods is important…
Answer: …because they give your body energy and help you grow.

Question: How does Sam show courage in the story?
Restated: Sam shows courage in the story…
Answer: …when he stands up to the bully even though he is scared.
