RACE Writing Strategy

The third step of the RACE strategy is C – Cite text evidence. After you restate the question and give your answer, you need to prove it with evidence from the text. This shows that your answer is not just an opinion—it is supported by what you read.

Here are some tips for citing evidence:

  • Use quotation marks if you copy words directly from the text.

  • You can also paraphrase (put it in your own words), but still point to the part of the text.

  • Always connect the evidence back to your answer.

  • Use sentence starters like:

    • According to the text…

    • The author states…

    • In the passage, it says…

Example

Question: Why is Rosa considered brave in the story?
Restated & Answered: Rosa is considered brave because she stands up for her beliefs.
Cited Evidence: According to the text, “Rosa refused to move from her seat even when she was told she had to.”
